New Jersey Education Advocacy Services
My Own Star is an educational advocacy service that works with parents who are seeking a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) for their child. My Own Star assists parents to effectively collaborate with schools to develop and continue to improve goal-oriented communication regarding an appropriate, comprehensive plan to meet the unique needs of each child.
Initial Consultation:
As a parent or guardian, you can contact My Own Star via phone. This initial consultation is provided at no cost for up to 60 minutes. It is important to provide detailed information regarding your concerns for your child. (For example, if your child has an IEP or 504 plan, you will want to have a copy at hand as specific information may be needed.) Based on the information provided to me regarding your child, I will offer advice regarding steps that you can take.
If you decide my services are needed, I’ll discuss the next step, which is Formal Intake.
Formal Intake: The fees for my service will be determined based on income. (See the Advocacy Services Fees page.) I will explain the extent of my services and discuss the Letter of Engagement and the retainer fee. NOTE: (I will begin to serve as your advocate once I receive the signed Letter of Engagement along with the retainer fee*.)
Consent for Records Release: I’ll need to receive copies of various records/documents from the school. (I will provide you with a form for release of such records to My Own Star.) It is most important that the school provides the requested information as quickly as possible.
Based on my initial review of the documents received, I then communicate with you my findings, and we discuss our next actions.
Once all documents are received (there is often a delay in obtaining records from agencies other than the school district), I review them and provide a written summary to you. This summary includes all records received and an analysis of the current IEP or 504. All findings and conclusions are discussed with you, and a communication is sent to the school seeking appropriate action. As your advocate, I typically attend (in person or virtually) all school meetings related to your child’s educational needs.
